With her fellow models putting the catty into catwalk, the up-and-coming Jenner seems to be taking their remarks to heart.
Lost in Showbiz cannot help but be intrigued by the saga of Kim Kardashian’s half-sister Kendall Jenner and her nascent modelling career. It all appeared to be going so well: runway appearances for Balmain, Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger and Diane von Furstenberg. And yet, reports suggested that, behind the scenes, Jenner had been the victim of a bullying campaign, with other models putting cigarette butts in her drink, and one writing an open letter claiming that her success is down to designers “milking her fame”. One magazine cover suggested that, at 8st 7lbs, Jenner had been branded “too fat for the runway”, and “needs to lose 10lbs”, alongside a photograph of her that appeared to show some cellulite on the back of her legs.
The rumours were subsequently denied by Jenner’s mother, but by then the damage had been done. LiS’s head was reeling and its jaw scraping the floor in astonishment. The fashion world! Who would have thought it was a broiling mass of mean-spirited bitching, a miserable, grasping, venal place, predicated on shallowness, in which women are paraded around and pitted against each other like animals in a fight outside a rural pub, their body images irreparably damaged by the setting of unattainable physical goals and the inevitable shame heaped on those who fail to meet them? Before the scales fell from its eyes, LiS had always assumed it was a cosy but empowering utopia of sisterly chumminess and good feeling, where “come one come all, but come as you are – it’s what’s inside that counts!” was very much the motto. Look at its ambassadors. Naomi Campbell? She seems nice. Karl Lagerfeld, with his high collars and his mouth permanently pursed in a cat’s arse of disapproval, ever-ready to offer his opinion on which women in the public eye are too fat. Do they seem like the kind of people who would thrive in a world of malice and superficiality?
Thankfully, Kendall Jenner has come up with the perfect riposte: “Her sister Khloe [Kardashian] is lining up sessions with a personal trainer and a better diet.” Lost in Showbiz can only gawp in admiration and offers a round of applause. Well done! Get yourself on a diet! That’ll certainly show your alleged tormentors that you don’t care what they say! Send out a strong message to the bullies: you’ve got a point and I’m very sorry!
